FAENA NUEVA
by catherine bailey & simone earnhardt
Our friend, potter and Director of Heath LA, Adam Silverman has been working for months on an entirely new body of work — launching April 10 at Heath LA. Faena Nueva: New Glazes on New pots — merges beauty and ugliness, elegance and violence, and is on display April 10-25.
The word Faena means labor in Spanish and also refers to the middle, most choreographed and beautiful stage of a Spanish bullfight — the inspiration for the pieces in Adam's show.
As a child, Adam was both fascinated and repelled by the experience of going to bullfights with his Uncle in Spain. His words, "The beauty of the brightly colored clothing and the choreographed 'dance of death' is ironic considering the spectacle occurring before your eyes — the torture and slaughter of the bull."
Adam doesn't often work with such literal inspiration so this show represents a departure from his previous pieces. As you probably know, he's known for combining traditional methods with experimental glazes, resulting in work that is "sensual, gritty and beautiful (New York Times)". And while he stays true to these core characteristics in the Faena Nueva exhibition, this time he allowed the aesthetic of the Spanish bullfights to fuel his inspiration.
On April 10, Adam will be debuting six entirely new glaze bases all at once, something he has not done in many years. The group was developed over a myriad of months and encompassed over one hundred and fifty glaze tests.
Please join us for sangria at the opening reception on April 10 from 6-9pm at Heath LA — all are welcome.
The show runs April 10 through April 25 at Heath LA.
YES, WE'RE OPEN
The Heath Marketplace in the San Francisco Ferry Building is officially open for business. The space is amazing, thanks to our friends at Commune. A few details to highlight: There are five incredible Heath tile installations within. One is comprised of over eighty 2x4"s, made up of each tile glaze we offer — it's quite beautiful and very informative. A monitor with a live-feed from our Sausalito factory allows you to feel like you're right there, watching as our pieces are made. If that taste of production leaves you wanting more, we've coordinated our factory tours with the ferry schedule from San Francisco. That means you can shop the Ferry Building, cruise across the bay, tour our Sausalito factory and end up right back where you started, only a few hours later.
Please stop by — perhaps Saturday morning for the Farmer's Market (Blue Bottle coffee in-hand) or during your weekday lunch-hour — we'll be there. In the meantime, here are a few photos to whet your appetite.
Three locations, one factory and one reason why. Thank you all for your continued support. We couldn't do it without you.
