SAN FRANCISCO SUNSET

We've seen a lot of beautiful Heath tile installations over the years (keep the photos coming) and nearly every time, we're amazed and inspired by our customer's creativity - each is an original work of art. On occasion, we run across an installation that rings particularly true with Heath. The use of tile within the space is both seamless and original — with particular attention given to the integration of architecture and materials. Architect John Lum is responsible for one of our all time favorite installations. We met John a few years ago after learning that he was the architect responsible for a friend of a friend's house. His use of oval tiles in the gunmetal glaze, placed vertically above the fireplace is stunning. It's very simple — one color, one shape but texture is perfectly balanced by the clean architectural lines and the muted colors of the book silhouettes surrounding. Two years later, with John Lum as the architect of the 2007 San Francisco Sunset Idea House, we meet again to plan his use of Heath tile. We are often involved with the Sunset Houses, but this one was particularly exciting. It marks the first time that Sunset has built an Idea House in a dense urban area, demonstrating how to make the most of a compact site. (continued above)
