DAVID MELLOR — DESIGNER/MAKER

by catherine bailey and simone earnhardt
We have true admiration for designer/makers. Of course, we're biased, since it's what we do at Heath. We see it as a worthwhile, satisfying and sustainable way to make a living, so, naturally, we like to support others who share this belief. For the past few months, we've been searching for a flatware to pair with our tableware. Our search criteria: a company that shares our designer/maker passion, with a vision for craft, quality and conscious manufacturing. We finally found all that (and more) in David Mellor. Not surprisingly, his flatware collection is the latest addition to our online and Factory Store offerings.

David Mellor was originally trained as a silversmith, meaning his pieces are exquisitely designed and crafted with the utmost attention to detail. His forms are so carefully considered — from the weight, to the lines and angles, to the way they rest in your hand. Like all good design, David Mellor's cutlery is made up of functional objects of art that last a lifetime. We're simply obsessed (if that isn't already obvious). David Mellor Design is housed in a purpose-designed modern factory in the Peak National Park in London. The Round Building, designed by Sir Michael Hopkins, has won numerous architectural awards. Even their manufacturing facility impresses us. David Mellor's company was started in 1973 and had been designing and producing metal crafted product ever since. Today, Corin Mellor carries on his father's tradition as the company's Creative Director. His most recent contribution is the company's first range of stainless steel kitchen knives. We hope you enjoy learning about and using David Mellor's pieces as much as we do.

Note: Some of you may remember our relationship with Norstaal. Due to the unfortunate sale of the company and moving of their manufacturing, we decided to look for another manufacturer. One door closes, another opens...
