LOCAL TREASURES
by catherine bailey and simone earnhardt
As residents of Sausalito we're a little nervous to talk about art. It seems that tourism (the type that runs rampant around here), when put in the same sentence as "gallery" and "art", spurs the lowest level of mediocre and derivative form of art in our opinion, of course. That said, there are some wonderful little-known treasures around here June Schwarcz is one of them, and well, Heath (but you already knew that). June is a true Sausalito gem. Though her pieces have been in many significant museums, including the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this may be the first you're hearing of her. Her medium is very unusual she creates small expressionistic vessels by stitching, enameling and electroplating metal to produce fantastic surface and structural qualities reminiscent of sculptures made of textiles. The intimate vessels are a true merger of art and craft, each with its own personality. Though enameling is a traditional |

Her radical departure from the traditional craft is analogous to Peter Voulkos's disruption of the traditional craft of Ceramics. Her home, which is up the hill in northern Sausalito is impeccably curated with an amazing collection of art from around the world. To see June's work in person, you can visit InSite Antiques & Design and Velvet Da Vinci in San Francisco & DeVera in NYC. KQED recently aired a show on June, go here to follow any future broadcasts. And lastly, take a look at the photos we took while visiting June's home recently you'll see what a wonderful treasure she is. |
