THE MARGARIDO HOUSE
by catherine bailey and simone earnhardt
We've worked with some very interesting people and been involved in some wonderful projects lately. From the newly opened East Asian Library on the Berkeley campus with Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, to dinnerware for Brassiere 44 in New York's newly remodeled Royalton hotel. The next is on Margarido Drive in the Oakland hills the first home in the country to be LEED-H certified and GreenPoint Rated. The Developer and our friend Mike McDonald began building a highly designed, highly sustainable residence in 2006 the first in his plan to offer a greener future.
We met Mike at the Dwell on Design show in 2006. He told us that he, "was interested in working with Heath on the Margarido House project specifically because of our focus on using high quality, and local manufactured materials."
We're drawn to people like Mike. People who stand behind and foster their passion. Mike considered every detail of the home from solar electric power to locally-sourced materials to on-site rain and ground reclamation tanks and it paid off. He ended up with an very beautiful home and one that exceeds California's Title 24 energy standards by 55%.
Heath tiles are installed in the master bath, guest bath, office bath and kitchen bar. In addition, (and the most exciting feature) we re-used our kiln shelves and made them into custom exterior tile for the facade and foyer floor. The kiln shelves are comprised of ceramic clay material, used originally as surfaces upon which our dinnerware and tiles are fired inside the kiln. The shelves have a lifespan of about 3 months in their regular intended use but after we glazed, fired and installed them, they become permanent fixtures in the house.

We were honored to be a part of this project and apparently the feeling was mutual...In a recent email from Mike regarding our partnership on The Margardio House: "I stumbled across this quote by Edith in the Heath Ceramics book and find it to be very much in line with how the Margarido House project has occurred for me...thanks for the partnership and inspiration!" 'The influence was in knowing that there was and is a community of creative people who listen to the same drummer and that I am not alone in my way of seeing and hearing and being.' Edith Heath
