SHADES OF GREEN
by catherine bailey and simone earnhardt

Two weeks ago, the New York Times Magazine dedicated its issue to Eco-tecture or sustainable architecture. There was a fantastic quote by Dutch Architect, Willem Jan Neutelings, "A building's efficiency should be measured not just by it's mechanical systems, but also by how much energy it uses over its lifetime. More energy is expended in a building's construction than at any other stage, so a structure that lasts 100 years will use far less energy than one that lasts 5, no matter how efficient". We think a lot about how we fit into the "green" picture and Neutelings comment touched on something we think a lot about at Heath. While our products are not produced with post-consumer waste or materials that can be dropped into your curbside recycling bin — they do last a lifetime (so to speak) and are often passed on for generations. Our feeling: what's the good of making something recyclable if you can only use it once before it's sent back to be made into yet another disposable, recyclable and "green" product

— thus using tons of energy in the process. Don't get us wrong, reuse is necessary and extremely important but longevity will always outweigh its benefits.

By focusing on the process and the people behind the process, we strive to affect the relationship that our customers have with our products — by raising the consciousness level for a products longevity and inspiring them to have fewer and more meaningful possessions.
