Fort Baker

NEIGHBORS

There's no project we'd rather be a part of than one focused on local preservation, renewal, design, craftsmanship and lessening environmental impact. After all, that's what Heath is all about.

Fort Baker is one of the most beautiful places on earth (yes, we're biased). Located in Sausalito, at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, the historic military parade ground, established in 1897, has views of Alcatraz, the San Francisco skyline, the Bay, the Marin Headlands and the best land view of the Golden Gate Bridge — it really doesn't get much better.

Having sat vacant for many years, Fort Baker is finally getting a facelift. Fortunately, the focus is on historic preservation and restoration, undertaken by just the right people — The Golden Gate National Parks and Passport Resorts. Passport Resorts is renowned for developing and operating award-winning resorts that promote environmental and social responsibility, support sustainable development, and offer an amazing guest experience (Post Ranch Inn, Hotel Hana-Maui and the Fiji Resort).

Together they are creating Cavallo Point and the Institute at the Golden Gate — an incredible lodge and meeting/teaching facility dedicated to advancing the health, sustainability, and protection of the environment. Extraordinary lodging combined with programs focused on the Culinary, Healing and Creative Arts will all be happening here in just a few months.

Cavallo Point combines historic accommodations — original Officer's quarters meticulously renovated to the period of Fort Baker's historical significance, 1935, using original materials (fireplaces, tin ceilings, tiles, etc) — with contemporary accommodations: newly constructed rooms with views that embrace the dramatic beauty of Fort Baker's surroundings — done by Leddy Matum Stacy Architects. All the rooms focus on what Passport Resorts is known for — beautiful, high-end comfort and style.
We've been watching the construction from afar and finally got our personal hard-hat tour a few days ago — it was amazing. Our Heathware will have a home in the new Culinary Arts kitchen, run by former Chez Panisse cook Kelsie Kerr. The Culinary Arts program will offer small groups hands-on experience with notable chefs, along with visits to local farms, vineyards and artisan shops. Of course, to top it off, you get the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of your labor with a tasty meal. Heath will also be featured in parts of the restaurant and bar — headed up by chef Joseph Humphrey, most recently from Meadowood Resort and Auberge du Soleil.

Have a look at some photos from our tour and visit Cavallo Point's website for information on lodging and programs. Opening May 2008.

One of our closest friends is an amazing bag designer/maker in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We recently collaborated on a Picnic Bag Set for our Summer 08 Seasonal collection. Have a look at our photos taken on a recent trip to Sherry's studio.
