ALL WRAPPED UP

by catherine bailey and sophie calvi
Just last month, we launched the Heath Kid's Set. It's an adorable pint-sized Heath plate in apple red, a bowl in zest yellow and a cup in blueberry. We coupled the dinnerware with a set of child's flatware by British flatware designer David Mellor — and wrapped it all up, lunch-box style, in a custom cardboard box. We often tell you about our products, process and inspiration but, in this case, it's the packaging we thought was worth an extra-special mention.

Christina Zamora, our very talented Industrial Designer, poured her heart into designing this factory-in-a-box (she does this with every project, by the way). Her goal was to make this more than just a package. She wanted this piece to convey to little ones not only the importance of how we make things, but also who makes them. She put the same quality and care into the box design that we put into every product we make — hoping to give our littlest customers a taste of longevity and re-use, along with a dab of imagination. Inspired by her own love of objects, Christina intended this box to have a second life as a place to store favorite toys or maybe become the center of a make-believe studio and factory.

The characters on the box are loosely inspired by '70s Fisher Price "little people," as well as real-life Heath employees. The interior graphics depict the characters at work at their jobs in the factory making Heathware. The drawings flow from the pug mill where clay is made to the tile area on the left where the ram press makes tile or dinnerware, and then on to the jigger machine that forms bowls. Each illustration represents an important part of our production, and we find the graphic translation of this process to kid-friendly land fantastic.

OPEN STUDIO/ANNUAL SALE

Our Open Studio is Nov 21-23. There will be historic factory tours, hands-on tile glazing activity, delicious treats and 20% off our entire Factory Store — dinnerware, tile, prototypes and samples. After the Open Studio ends on the 23rd, our Annual Sale continues through Nov 30. Sale is in-store only, no phone or online orders. We know you'll have fun. Check out our new store hours.

BOOK SIGNING WITH LEO MARMOL

Please join us for a special evening honoring Marmol Radziner & Associates' new monograph, which highlights key residential, prefab and civic projects from the firm's 20-year history.

Thursday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. at Heath Ceramics Sausalito. The event is free — please RSVP via email or on our new Facebook page if you plan to attend. We look forward to seeing you.

MODERN BASICS

We have an exciting new tile line called Modern Basics. The line has a fantastic price, a beautiful palette of 6 colors, and it's all in stock. Unlike our regular line, which is all made to order, there is no need to pre-order. Tile can be selected and picked up at the same time at our factory, or we can ship it to you. Take a look!

ADDED HISTORIC FACTORY TOURS AND EXTENDED HOURS

Our factory tours have been a huge success, and people have been asking for more. So we are adding two more tours on the weekends. Now at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On Fridays we are offering a new working "lunch" tour. This tour will be given at 12:30 p.m. while production is in full swing. Space is limited on this tour, so please RSVP by calling our factory store at 415 332 3732 x13. No reservations are needed for our weekend tours.

After 60 years, we're extending our factory store hours! Monday through Wednesday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and on Sunday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. New hours November 6th!
