HEATH LOS ANGELES

by catherine bailey and simone earnhardt
The rumors are true... after years of mutual admiration, we've come together with Adam Silverman to form Heath Los Angeles — a natural extension of our Sausalito, California-based pottery. Inspired by Scandanavian mid-century design studios, Heath Los Angeles will include a retail space, a studio and a visiting artist gallery (not to mention a lovely courtyard for gatherings and events). In a nutshell, we'll be continuing our designer/maker tradition as we grow our community of craft and object enthusiasts.

To make our dream space a reality, we partnered with our friends at Commune Design — a very talented collection of interior designers, architects and graphic designers. Inspiration was drawn from the simplicity of form and materials seen in Donald Judd's furniture, as well as some of our favorite interiors, like the Ace Hotel in Portland and the Thunderbird Hotel in Marfa, Texas (Commune is designing the new Ace Hotel in Palm Springs...we can't wait to visit) . Have a look at some of the inspiration and progress photos from Heath Los Angeles — the space is going to be amazing.

Another factor in making this dream a reality is ceramicist Adam Silverman of Atwater Pottery, who will be our Los Angeles Studio Director. Adam will design and create original pieces for our two stores, as well as one-of-a-kind and custom small run pieces for the local Los Angeles design community. Adam is known for creating vessels that combine clean, modern shapes with non-traditional glazes, which results in a wonderful balance between urban and organic.

In addition, we'll have a gallery space where we'll host shows of work sympathetic to our aesthetic, mission and many interests. Once we're up and running, show information will be listed on the News & Events section of our website.

So, Heath Los Angeles will be just like our Sausalito location, with a few differences. We'll have all the same great dinnerware, first and second quality, plus unique home accessories and our gift registry. Tile and full production will stay in Sausalito, while custom projects will be designed and produced at the Los Angeles Studio. (cont'd. next column)
Doors open December 2008. We really hope to see you there. More details to come...

HEATH KID'S & SEASONAL COLLECTION

Heath Kid's — The newest addition to our permanent collection couples a brightly colored, pint-sized, Heath plate, bowl and cup with David Mellor's kid's flatware set — all packaged in its very own custom cardboard factory.

Our Limited Edition Winter Collection is now available. As always, we've combined old favories with new glazes and techniques — this season, we have matte red fusion and varying tones of burgundy. And, our picnic set is back by popular demand — this time a holiday version.

CERAMIC PUMPKIN SILENT AUCTION

Each year, Heath employees make some amazing ceramic pumpkins for our Halloween party. As the tradition grows, the results get more and more remarkable — remember 2007? This year, pumpkins will be available for silent auction at the Heath Factory Store — beginning Saturday, October 25th at 10:00am and closing at 4:30pm on Sunday, Oct. 26th. You'll need to be present in our store to make a bid — don't miss it!

MOSAIC WORKSHOP

Lisa Bookstein, long-time mosaic artist and instructor (and Heath staff member) will be holding a workshop October 25-26 — the last in 2008. There will be a new round starting in January, if you're interested in getting on an advance notice email list, email Lisa. October details here
