Originally designed in 1960, Heath’s Rim Line
was developed for easy stacking and comfortable handling, quickly becoming a favorite ever since. We love its wide rim that shows off a generous strip of natural clay while framing plated food just right. It’s a sophisticated but casual dinnerware line with clean lines and an organic feel, right in line with our love for glazes and letting the natural material of clay do its thing. And, of course, it’s the base shape set for our Tartine Collection
— our latest dinnerware line introduced in 2016.
The color palette came out of our collaboration with Tartine, a beloved San Francisco bakery who opened a new space that same year: Tartine Manufactory
, at Heath SF. We worked directly with Tartine founders Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson to design unique dinnerware for Tartine Manufactory — and the resulting collection available for purchase online and in our showrooms.
The collection introduced three additional glazes to the existing dinnerware line, including a brand new one: the beautiful and glossy Tartine Teal. With its shifting tones of aquamarine and cobalt, it truly comes to life in the light, shimmering with depth and vitality. Other glazes in the collection include the most versatile and elegant of neutrals, Sand and Cocoa. Sound familiar? Sand, a speckled off-white, comes from our Chez Panisse Line
, and the warm, matte Cocoa is part of the Coupe Line
. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability and the longevity of good design, these glazes make it easy to integrate new pieces you already own, no matter what collection.
It felt natural to work with Tartine: we share similar values, like a deep-rooted commitment to craft, materiality, design, and community. The actual design process took many elements into consideration, comments Heath co-owner and Creative Director Catherine Bailey. “We felt that the dinnerware should complement the food, of course, but also the materials and architecture of the space. Chad and Liz were talking about new ways of making some simple foods, perfecting some of their classics while trying new things. At the same time, Commune Design, working closely with Chad and Liz, was proposing the use of really honest and utilitarian materials: wood, copper, concrete, and even unglazed ceramic tile (ours, of course!). The Rim Line makes the raw clay an integral part of the palette rather than the background.”

Or you can mix and match your own setting. Stay within the Rim Line to combine Tartine colors with the existing ones (Redwood, Opaque White, and Moonstone). We love Redwood and Sand mixed together. You can also get creative and experiment with design across the lines (but remember that basic and full set discounts are only applicable within each line). Try a Coupe salad plate in Fawn/Cocoa with a Rim cereal bowl in Cocoa, or a set of Chez Panisse cafe bowls in Sand next to a matching Rim dinner plate.
