For Artek’s FIN/JPN Friendship Collection Tokyo-based architect Nagasaka merges traditional Japanese crafts into his own original process, resulting in what he calls ColoRing. For ColoRing, soft-grained pine is used as surface veneer which is brushed to create an uneven wood surface accentuating the natural grain of the wood. Two layers of colored lacquer are then added, only to be subsequently sanded away to partially unveil the layers beneath. The surprising colour combinations and irregular patterns are a fresh take on a beloved Artek classic.
