Los Angeles // Book Signing and Cake-Tasting Reception with Sarah Magid
Please join us for a talk and cake-tasting by author and fashion designer Sarah Magid in celebration of her new book - ORGANIC AND CHIC: Cakes, Cookies, and Other Sweets that Taste as Good as They Look. A selection of cakes will be prepared and baked by Sarah Magid using the kilns in the Heath LA studio.
About the book: Organic baker Sarah Magic uses her background in fashion design to create stunning, unique and delicious desserts using organic and farmer’s market ingredients. ORGANIC AND CHIC is as much an expression of fashion, style and taste as it is of living a healthy lifestyle, and supporting local and organic foods. Through step-by-step photography, the book inspires readers to create a broad selection of desserts, including modern floral cakes and cupcakes to rustic farmer’s market sweets made with seasonal fruits, with every family member in mind.
About the author and baker: Sarah Magid is a jewelry designer with a custom cake business. She has worked for top fashion companies, including Tommy Hilfiger, J. EDITH HEATH: TABLETOP MODERNIST - This exhibition focuses on the life of Edith Heath and her defining influence on California design through pottery. Popular at dinner tables across the country and featured in many of the early American industrial design exhibitions, Heath Ceramics helped define mid-century modernism. Edith Heath began as a studio potter in San Francisco. She established Heath Ceramics in 1947 to meet the growing demand for her dinnerware and accessories. She focused on simple, minimalist style although her process was characterized by innovation and experimentation. Her use of unique glazes and clay underscored her belief that quality does not have to be sacrificed for mass production and accessibility. Her creations were also a reflection of the post-war attitudes toward a more relaxed American lifestyle, especially in California where indoor-outdoor living was taking root.
A must see! Here's a sneak peek of the exhibition, taken by Cathy during her recent visit to the museum.
Directions and information on the PMCA, can be found here. Enjoy!

UPDATE ON HEATH-WAY'S MONSTER POTHOLES - JANUARY 2007
We completely understand the complaints from our customers about the condition of the roadway which is the main access to our store - we have to drive through it every day!
We might finally be seeing some resolution on the problem which we hope will soon result in a repaired roadway. After at least a decade of denials from the City of Sausalito regarding their responsibility for the road's condition, including the City Manager's 2006 very false statement published in the SF Chronicle that it is a private roadway belonging to Heath Ceramics, the city is finding it harder to ignore the problem once we handed them a copy of their deed of trust to the roadway which proves that they acquired it in 1965. Still shocking is that the city has made no improvements in 40 years and that its taken this long, and this much effort, for them to start to show some concern and responsibility to implement repairs. Is the role of government to "serve the public" or "frustrate the public". In this town they sure have put a lot of effort into the latter so lets keep our fingers crossed.
Maybe you can help by dropping an email or phone call to the responsible party: Sausalito Mayor, Mike Kelly - MKelly@MKEquities.com or 415.289.4166. Feel free to let him know what you think!
