Design Series 2: Between Form & Function

Sat. December 6, 6 – 8:30 pm at Heath San Francisco

Experience and celebrate the creative process, Heath style. Our second design series. 2 Clay Studios. A year in the making.

When we set out to design things at Heath, it’s not just with paper or pixels.

We design as much with our hands and minds, letting the making inform the design and vice versa, in a continuous round of give and take. And that’s exactly what goes on in the Heath Clay Studio

As we did last year with candleholders, we gave our Clay Studios a single subject to explore for a year. For Design Series 2: Between Form and Function, it was a Heath multi-stem vase. The result? Over 150 one-of-a-kind vases that run the gamut from traditional to a little less expected, but each one quintessentially Heath. And now we’re ready to share the results with you.

Come and see on Saturday, December 6, from 6-8:30pm. Learn what the process was like and see how different it is from the traditional design process. Find your perfect vase and see where it came in the evolution of the design (early or late, or something in between?). Then, mingle and compare notes with friends old and new as you share wine from Turkovich Wines and nibbles to kick off the festive season right.

RSVP here.

Blobography: Brendan Monroe x Heath

November 1 – November 30 at Heath Los Angeles

The exciting artist, illustrator, and sculptor Brendan Monroe brings to life the worlds that we can't – or won't – see. The ever-curious Brendan collaborates with our LA studio to bring these creatures alive and also shares a collection of his sculptures, illustrations and more.

What do you get when you pair talented artist Brendan Monroe, best known for his hypnotic, science inspired illustrations and sculptures with Heath, best known for our crisp modern style? You get Blobograhy. See what happens in this show curated by Adam Silverman, who explains the collaboration this way: "Brendan's work lives in a weird parallel universe to that of ceramics but I could easily imagine the worlds colliding and resulting in something very strange and exciting."

Join us at a reception with the artist on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 6-8:30 pm. Share some beer, wine and nibbles, and learn more about Brendan and the collaborative process with Adam and Alex Reed, our LA Clay Studio manager who worked alongside Brendan. The show runs through November 30 at Heath LA.

Winter Seasonal Collection

October 1, 2014 – April 1, 2015

Winter Seasonal Collection

October 1, 2014 – April 1, 2015

The days are getting shorter, which means winter (as we Californians know it) is on its way.

Along with the shortening days comes our newest seasonal collection. This year, we found inspiration in the crisp, snow-covered mountains near Lake Tahoe—as wintery as it gets for us in this state. Whether it's the vivid blues of the California winter sky reflected in the deep, clear lake and off the Sierra snows, or the glow of the moon reflecting off of the dark lake on a bracingly cold night, it's the kind of beauty that stays with you forever. Let our Winter Seasonal '14 glazes – deep blue, glacier, and moonlight – remind you of the stillness and beauty of the season, California-style.

Find new versions of old favorites like bud vases, mugs and serving pieces, or discover new ones – like our rim bowls or stunning Heath House clock in deep blue. Hibernate beautifully.

Summer Seasonal Collection

April 1, 2014 – October 1, 2014

Inspired by the Icelandic landscape, we’ve created vibrant matte green and lavender glazes that remind us of the bursts of new plant life, contrasted with a warm basalt grey reminiscent of the rich, dark earth.

We also continue the Heath tradition of glaze exploration with a layered technique consisting of three layers of glazes. When fired, a unique textured surface is created on the pieces that makes us think of summer moss. This special technique is available on our bulb vase and deep serving bowl.

Design by Hand at Cooper-Hewitt

May 4 – 10, 2014 in New York City

Launched in fall 2013 with the iconic Finnish brand Marimekko, the Design by Hand series focuses on the craftsmanship, innovations and merits of contemporary global designers.

We're proud and excited that the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, has invited us to be part of their Design by Hand Series, which focuses on craftsmanship and innovations of contemporary global designers.

The program connects university students, high school students, adults, and families with great design and the people behind it. In one workshop, teens work with Heath designers to make clay beads and learn about texture, pattern and glaze. In another, the Heath team will work with college students to design tea sets and tableware. And in another, adults get to try their hand at making beads. Finally, at a public lecture, Catherine Bailey (Design Director), Robin Petravic (Managing Director) and Tung Chiang (San Francisco Studio Director) will share the history and inspiration behind all things Heath.

Heath LA Studio Director Adam Silverman collaborates with Kohei Oda for a special exhibit in Venice, CA.

A Tale of Plant & Pot invites you to witness as a little magic unfolds in Venice.

Fascinated by the relationship of art to nature, Chariots on Fire has commissioned Heath LA Studio Director and renowned LA-based potter Adam Silverman to create a new set of work filled with the plant artistry of Kohei Oda, owner of Qusamura, an award-winning plant shop in Japan. While the two will work independently, they will be sharing a common vision based on their love of the natural world and the age-old harmony between pot and plant. The result, A Tale of Plant & Pot, is an exchange of ideas designed like the best of relationships, formed by common interest and a shared understanding of space and form.

Winter Seasonal Collection

Winter Seasonal Collection

October 1, 2013 – April 1, 2014

A Collection evoking a crisp, frosty wintry day

This season, warm winter hues contrast with a texture that remind us of a powdery snow. We continue exploring the interaction of new and interesting materials with Heath glazes, and for this Collection, we create a textural experience on vase shapes, transitioning from smooth and saturated to tactile and white.

Our interpretation of engobe (a clay-like glaze) allows us to explore and challenge the limit of texture. The end result highlights the raw clay material and creates a contrast to warm and cool grays and turquoise seen throughout the Collection pieces.

The full range of the palette can be seen in the bud vases and multi-stem vases, with the warm and cool hues combining with a rich turquoise in accent serving pieces to round out the Collection. The collection colors and textures come together to evoke a crisp and frosty wintry day.

The Winter Seasonal Collection is available online and in stores.

Heath Los Angeles hosts a signing and celebration of the new book by Bill Stern, California's Designing Women

Heath Los Angeles hosts a signing and celebration of this new book by Bill Stern, executive director of the Museum of California Design, including Edith Heath and other notable women designers in California—many of whom will be in attendance at the event. The Museum of California Design will be on hand with books available for purchase. Join us Saturday, February 1 from 2–5pm in the Los Angeles showroom!

More about the book: "Whether they designed utilitarian products, home décor or personal adornment, women designers in California have worked in the latest styles, materials, and technologies of their day. But even as they participated in shaping the look of everyday life in the 20th century, their work was often unacknowledged and sometimes even uncredited. A few of the designers in this book – among them Edith Heath, Barbara Willis, Renée Firestone, Gere Kavanaugh, Deborah Sussman and April Greiman -- ensured that they would be properly credited by establishing their own production companies." -- Bill Stern

    Adam Silverman: 50 New Pots

First show of work in San Francisco & A Book Release Party

Celebrating the potter and Heath Los Angeles studio director's first SF show & new book

Coinciding with the launch of Silverman’s new book, Adam Silverman Ceramics, a new monograph from Rizzoli Press, is Silverman’s first show in San Francisco, featuring work not previously shown, including some pieces in new clay bodies and glaze colors.

50 New Pots continues the evolutionary arc of Silverman’s previous work, exploring the merger of form, color and texture in search of something both new and timeless, strange and familiar, ugly and beautiful.

On Friday, September 27 from 6:30-9:30pm*, we’re showing these one-of-a-kind pots in a new and amazing space – The Boiler Room. It’s an undeveloped and dramatic backdrop to Adam’s raw, poignant work and part of the Heath San Francisco campus. Visit this never seen before space this night only to meet Adam, explore the work in a unique context and purchase the just-released copy of the new book and have it signed in person.

Following the weekend, the show continues in the Heath showroom gallery space through October 27.

*Please note the later time than originally announced.

    Summer Seasonal Collection

    April 1 – October 1, 2013

    Bright blues and dipped hues

This season showcases two brightly saturated blues that stand alone on classic shapes, and, when dipped and layered, come together on vases and containers to produce a new blue hue. The blues contrast with a cool green in brief moments throughout the collection, as well as a hint of glossy white, which grounds the collection and ties it all together with a clean and light freshness.

The full season’s palette can be seen in the Bud Vase Set, Ice Cream Set and our Summer Drink Set. There are bowls for nesting freshly churned ice cream and fruit salads, and tall cups for fresh lemonade and iced tea. There are containers for anything you can think of, and vases ready to proudly display the season’s first bloom. Together, the collection is at once bright and cool, and beckons Summer.

“My Head Disappears When My Hands are Thinking”
with Geoff McFetridge and Heath Ceramics is on at
Playmountain in Tokyo through February 17

This is the second stop for the show, which originally appeared at Heath Los Angeles in the Fall of 2011. This show features new and significant pieces and also cast and hand-painted pieces using classic Heath shapes that are similar to original pieces in the show. There are also unique hand-painted furniture pieces.

A special thank you to our friend, Shin Nakahara, who hosted the show in his amazing Playmountain space and the reception in his Tas Yard restaurant/cafe. Playmountain sells interesting design objects with a high level of craft - everything from Heath items to custom leather sofas that are designed by Nakahara and his team and "Landscape Products" designed by Nakahara and made by craftsmen in Japan.

Images from the show opening and Geoff’s work are here.

An excerpt from the show book explains Artist Geoff McFetridge's perspective further:

"This book (which goes along with the show) is called "The Opposite of an Experiment" because that is how I view my work. I am not trying things looking for results. I do not want to discover anything. I want the process that goes into making the work to be felt by the viewer. This process should seem unique but the final product should feel like it has always existed."

    Winter Seasonal Collection

    October 1 – April 1, 2013

Moment-in-time creations and explorations in glaze development and technique
    that express the season

Rich hues and a starry Winter sky

Rich blue and grey hues in matte and glossy tones combine with a contrasting highlight of bright yellow for a moment-in-time collection and expression of the season.

A unique, layered glaze technique produces a number of items within the collection that are highly individual — no two are the same, but they combine beautifully to create a collection of pieces ranging from a light horizon of stars to a fully saturated Winter sky.

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 17, 6–8pm

Adam Silverman's 'New Pots and Sculptures' exhibition at Edward Cella Art + Architecture features a new installment of pots and large-scale sculptures.

Silverman seeks an unlikely marriage of the formal and the primordial, transforming raw materials through a practice that invokes both the discipline of design and the exploratory investigations of organic risk.

In 'New Pots and Sculptures,' Silverman continues to challenge the materials and methods of his craft towards new and unexpected results.

    Introducing three matte glazes

A collaboration between Heath Ceramics, Chez Panisse’s Alice Waters and Christina Kim

Heath Ceramics’ Chez Panisse Collection is now available in three new matte glaze colors, and two original glossy glaze colors. New matte hues of Sand, Tapenade and Slate meet the original Jicama and Cardoon glazes, initially inspired by the iconic Chez Panisse Restaurant.

The additional of matte glazes extends the palette and range of mixing and matching opportunities with Heath’s other dinnerware collections.

The original collection and refined palette is a collaboration between Heath Ceramics, Chef Alice Waters and Designer Christina Kim. A portion of all sales of this collection benefit Waters' Edible Schoolyard Project.

Artists respond to the Golden Gate Bridge at 75. Named in honor of the unique paint color of the span,
this exhibition offers fresh perspectives by contemporary artists on an enduring landmark.

A FOR-SITE Foundation project at historic Fort Point, running May 25 – October 28, 2012, this celebration includes an installation featuring Heath Ceramics.

We’re honored to be included in Stephanie Syjuco’s project: The International Orange Commemorative Store (A Proposition), stocked with a typical array of souvenirs all saturated in shades of the Golden Gate Bridge’s famous hue.

One thing distinguishes this from a typical souvenir shop, however: these wares, crafted by a variety of local producers, are not for sale. This great video brings Heath's vision in participating in this celebration to life.

And just a reminder: Heath pieces were made as a part of the installation, but are not produced for sale. For more about the project, visit www.international-orange.org.

Function Dysfunction, a group exhibition of new functional and sculptural works by Heath Ceramics’ Adam Silverman, Alma Allen, and Ani Kasten, will be held June 8 – July 14 at Tomio Koyama Gallery Kyoto TKG Editions Kyoto and TKG Ceramics.

Silverman and Kasten will present these works in ceramic, while Allen will show wood and bronze bowls and bronze sculpture. All three artists work along the line between function and sculpture. Each makes clearly functional work, but that is "sculptural" and very expressive. As well each employs the same materials and methods to make sculpture.

Their investigations into the materials and methods of making for sculptures, often later inform their functional work, and vice versa. This is the first group exhibition that will feature the encounter of the rich worlds of the three artists, all of who addresses nature in their own ways.

Man-Made: Vessels by California Craftsmen at the Bakersfield Museum of Art,
featuring work by Heath's Adam Silverman and others.

The exhibit highlights sculptural vessels by men working in the areas of glass, wood, and stoneware.

Bill Clark, a local wood turner, uses a technique called branding, enabling him to burn designs into the wood.

Dewey Garrett carves into his wooden forms to expose various rings and what he calls the ‘stories of the [palm trees’] surroundings.’

Christopher Jeffries has mastered a glass cutting technique to create a multilayered exterior.

Adam Silverman uses his own special glazes to create a highly texturized surface.

Each form offers a look at the artists’ processes resulting in unique artwork crafted by hand.

Shifting Thoughts on Design, Fashion, Craft and DIY

On occasion of New York Design Week 2012, Alabama Chanin – in collaboration with its fashion and design partners – is organizing a series of talks, workshops, and gatherings with leaders in the fashion, design, and craft/DIY communities, including Heath Ceramics.

The events bring together a dynamic combination of industry leaders to explore the ways in which the fashion, art, and design worlds are inextricably linked to the world of craft/DIY and how each of these worlds elevates the others.

The conversation will look to create an intersection – a meeting point – to explore, discuss, and celebrate the role of local production, handmade, and craft/DIY in fashion and design as a way to empower individuals, businesses, and communities.

We're excited and we hope you are too. Our roots remain strong in Sausalito, where our factory store will remain and where dinnerware production will continue to be made. Stay tuned for details as the project progresses.

Hand-thrown vessels melding traditional techniques with modern lines

Heath Ceramics is thrilled to announce the exhibition and sale of master potter Akio Nukaga’s most recent hand-thrown pots and vessels at Heath Los Angeles. The simple beauty and quiet elegance of his pieces are anything but lost in translation. His show will consist of over 100 one-of-a-kind specially made, entirely functional pieces — cups, plates, bowls, tea pots, serving bowls, platters and vases.

Employing the 200-year-old tradition of “Kasama” (a region in Japan known for its rich ceramic history), Nukaga’s work exudes a sense of warmth, while remaining clean and contemporary. In this way, his pieces seem to transcend traditional Japanese pottery. Show runs March 12 – 27, 2011.

    The Alabama Chanin Collection

    Launches November 6, 2011

A collaboration between Heath Ceramics and Alabama Chanin

One works in cloth, stitching in Alabama. One works in clay, firing in California. The two are joined, many miles apart, through texture, pattern and honest materials to create modern heirlooms.

Four curated place settings and a selection of serving pieces showcase a range of layering possibilities. Each speaks not only to the translation of thread and stitch to clay and glaze; but also to inspiration from crafters, family and friends.

    December 11, 2010

Our Beverely Blvd. showroom transformed into an unprecedented emulsion of clay, metal, ink, cotton, wood, lacquer, lithography and letterforms.

Heath and House Industries are having a party! If you're new to House, they're acclaimed designers famous for their mastery of the alphabet (and that's just the half of them). So, pen it on your calendar and get ready for two legendary design houses geeking out and having a really sweet holiday party.

OK, so maybe this celebration isn’t just for the holidays, but also one of things to come. We're talking about the first collaboration between Heath Ceramics and House Industries—the clay and font masters, respectively—and their new line of Heath House Numbers. We’ll display and sell a handful of prototypes at this event, though the official launch of the complete collection won’t take place until Summer 2011.

Check out a trailer House Industries made for the event here.
