Thanks for asking. Without a doubt, order early and choose ground shipping — this is good for you, and especially good for our planet. Ground, not air, is the greener way to go — using less fuel, causing less pollution, and thus a smaller footprint. And, of course, ordering early for the best, available goods, since inventory can dwindle the closer we get to the holidays.Do you offer expedited shipping?
Yes, we do, for those in a pinch. With that, fast is expensive, both monetarily and environmentally. Avoiding expedited orders (like 2-Day Air and Next Day), is one of the simplest gifts you can give the earth (and your wallet). Can you tell me about your packaging?
Why yes, it’s something we’re proud of. Excessive packaging is, by definition, bad design, and terrible for the environment. But done well, it prevents breakage and extends our story, adding value to Heath and our customers. In our showrooms, we typically wrap our ceramics in good old-fashioned, post-consumer newspaper. We give it a second life. Plus, after you’ve unwrapped your ceramics at home, you can toss that newspaper into the recycle bin. As for gifting, we think it looks pretty cool as-is, but the holidays tend to mean dressing up a little, and we get that, too. How do you avoid breakage?
To secure shipments, we use Expandos, which are triangular fillers made from post-consumer chipboard. They’re fully recyclable, as are the cardboard boxes used to ship your order. We don’t offer gift wrapping for shipped orders, since the the safety of your products is our number one priority. Expandos and gift wrap don’t mix so well — one cuts the other.Do you gift wrap?
In our showrooms, we use shredded newsprint to cushion products inside boxes and bags. We also keep a roll of kraft paper handy to aid in wrapping those inevitable tricky-shaped items. All our paper bags and chipboard boxes all hand-stamped with our logo. The result? Simple, classic packaging that you can feel good about, toss into the recycling bin after use, or better yet, reuse again and again! We don’t offer gift wrapping for shipped orders, since the the safety of your products is our number one priority in how we design our packaging for traveling. Speaking of transport, how do you get product from your factory to your showrooms?
Very deliberately. We take it for a ride in the Heath van — this trusty vehicle makes scheduled rounds from Sausalito to San Francisco, the Ferry Building, and LA. Moving product from location to location via the open road, while slower, is far more environmentally friendly than air transport — packaging is less extensive, less expensive, and often reusable. Being that excessive packaging is, by definition, bad design, we like it this way. Also, using Tetris-like packing skills, we can fit more, make additions and subtractions, maintain control and ownership from beginning to end, and make the transportation experience part of the product experience. Did you know that one of the reasons that all of our locations are in California is for the mindful transport of goods? It’s not the only reason, but it certainly plays a part.More Questions?
