This fall, two Playmountain shows are better than one! Introducing in tandem: a pop-up shop of i ro se, a Playmountain favorite, and the beautiful paper craft of SIWA.
The word "irose" is an ancient Japanese word for "siblings". Tokyo based design company I ro se, founded by designers (and brothers themselves!) Gen and Dai Takahashi. Drawing inspiration from disciplines of art, nature, science, and philosophy to produce conceptual, origami-esque pieces that combine elegance and playfulness — and a favorite of Playmountain East.
SIWA series started in 2008 by Japanese paper company Onao and Naoto Fukasawa, a well-known Industrial designer of Japan. Known for their daily-use washi paper — and other traditional Japanese paper, Onao developed, along with Fukusawa, Naoron: a hard-to-tear paper that — when crumpled — transforms into new texture when crumpled. "Siwa" is a pun on the Japanese word for wrinkle, "shiwa".
The Boiler Room is a place to find and connect with one-of-a-kind creations by artists whose work, stories, and values inspire us. As part of Playmountain East, a year-long exploration of the work and processes of Japanese and Japanese-influenced artists and makers, we’re thrilled to announce our newest shows featuring both SIWA and i ro se. Stop in and say hello, shop and enjoy!
