Galvanized Steel Planter I

For Heath’s Field Notes collection, Mexico City-based designer Fabien Cappello partnered with local artisans in Guadalajara, Jalisco to create a series of functional objects for home and garden. Following the longstanding Mexican tradition of hojalata, this planter was crafted by hand using galvanized steel.

Galvanized steel is durable and resistant to rust and corrosion thanks to the zinc coating on the surface. However, prolonged exposure to harsh or wet environments can degrade the coating and steel underneath. If necessary, clean with a soft sponge, water, and a mild, non-abrasive detergent taking care not to damage the zinc coating. Wipe dry.

In Mexico the word hojalata describes a trade that works in the production of functional objects and utensils either tin-plated or galvanised, rolled and embossed bland metal sheets.
