This small teapot features vertical lines carved down the body of the teapot, a whimsical spout and is decorated in Akio's signature white slip. The shinogi—a traditional Japanese decorative technique—are carved carefully by hand into the surface of the piece. After bisque firing Akio applies colored slips and then glazes the pieces with translucent matte glaze. Beautiful to see and incredible to hold.

Akio Nukaga crafts his pieces by hand to express the natural variation in the materials sourced from his town of Kasama, Japan. Your piece may vary slightly in size and appearance from the one pictured here.

We recommend hand washing with a mild, non-acidic and non-abrasive dish detergent, such as Seventh Generation or Planet Dishwashing Detergent. This piece is neither dishwasher safe nor oven safe. Please note that direct use on wood may cause water marks or scratching. A hallmark of Akio's pieces are the rustic texture of the surfaces. Over time this piece will develop a rich patina creating a record of the many ways you use it in your daily life.

In 2009, Akio traveled overseas for the first time to exhibit and share his pottery with a new audience at the Heath LA showroom. Since that show, Akio has brought new work to Heath every year, and the friendship that’s formed along the way is as soulful and alive as the objects themselves.
