#7 Indigo Column Vessel

For Akio Nukaga throwing on the wheel is a technique close to his heart, one that he can always rely on. Each piece in this collection is an exploration in stacking architectural forms including spheres, cylinders, and cones in hopes of pushing expectations of what tableware can be. This piece features his signature “Pleated Work” technique of carving grooves into the wet clay after it is thrown on the wheel. These grooves accentuate the profile of the vessel creating movement and rhythm. Akio's use of bright red slip in this piece is a special nod and celebration of his 60th birthday this year.

In 2009, Akio traveled overseas for the first time to exhibit and share his pottery with a new audience at the Heath LA showroom. Since that show, Akio has brought new work to Heath every year, and the friendship that’s formed along the way is as soulful and alive as the objects themselves.
