The word “monumental” is often used to describe Stan Bitters’ ceramic sculptures. But even at a small scale, this legendary American artist’s expression has a rare boldness. He's been making these ceramic birdhouses since the 1960s when he was artist-in-residence and the Hans Sumpf company. These ceramic birdhouses have a round opening on opposite sides and are hung with an all-weather cord. They are still made by hand in Southern California and exhibit his signature dedication to organic form and texture.

Due to the hand-made nature of this piece, each will vary slightly in size, texture, and color from the one photographed.

Each birdhouse is hung on an all-weather cord. Use this cord to securely attach the birdhouse. The texture of the glaze is delicate. Take care when cleaning. Use a soft brush, gentle pressure and—if necessary—a mild, non-acidic, and non-abrasive dish detergent.

Stan Bitters’ influence on California arts and crafts dates back to the 1960s, when he established himself as a Modernist sculptor who followed the lead of his material, letting the organic nature of clay show up strongly in the finished work.
